Statement by Mr. Hiroshi Onuma
First Secretary, Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations
On agenda item 131: Programme Planning
Main session of the Sixty-seventh Session
of the United Nations General Assembly
8 October 2012
Thank you, Mr. Chairman,
At the outset, my delegation would like to thank Mr. Eric Franck Saizonou, Chair of the fifty-second session of the Committee for Programme and Coordination (CPC), Mr. Johannes Huisman, Director, Programme Planning and Budget Division, and Mr. Mario Baez, Chief of Policy and Oversight Coordination Service, Office of the Under-Secretary-General for Management, for introducing their respective reports on this agenda item.
Mr. Chairman,
Japan is once again a member of the CPC, having returned in May; and participated in the fifty-second session of the CPC in June, with full membership for the first time since the year 2007. Our decision to come back to the CPC was made, because Japan recognized the significant role the CPC has in the process of making the regular budget of the United Nations.
Regarding the fifty-second session of the CPC, my delegation believes that we had a fruitful discussion, which focused on each programme, and enabled us to deepen our understanding of their substance. We also welcomed the adoption of the Report of the CPC on the work of that session, and we will continue to participate actively in the deliberations of the CPC.
Mr. Chairman,
Japan is ready to engage constructively in discussions on this agenda, reviewing the Report of the CPC from the viewpoint of the Fifth Committee.
Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
