Statement by Mr. Sho Ono

Counsellor, Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations

Fifth Committee

First resumed part of the Sixty-Ninth Session

Of the United Nations General Assembly

27 March 2015

Mr. Chairman,

First and foremost, at the conclusion of the first resumed session, I would like to express my congratulations for the work we have achieved during this session. We had many agenda items before us, and had to go through difficult negotiations, but in the end we finally managed to reach an agreement by consensus on time.

Against the backdrop of the meeting we had last Tuesday at the informal session of this Committee, my delegation has been positively engaged in the negotiations under all of the agenda items in a constructive manner, showing necessary flexibility throughout. We are glad also to see the constructive engagement and flexibility of the other Member States, as well, leading us to the conclusion of this session on time. The best practices of the working methods of this committee, including the effective use of the available time slots through parallel meetings, as well as the active engagement of coordinators, have led us to this fruitful outcome.

My delegation would like to thank all coordinators who successfully facilitated the negotiations to their conclusion. While acknowledging each other’s differences in the negotiations, we are respectful to each other and have explored earnestly the common grounds on which all sides are able to stand together.

My delegation would also like to thank the Secretariat and ACABQ for their efforts to ensure the timely issuance of documents during this session. My delegation sincerely hopes that this good practice will continue in the upcoming sessions.

Finally, I would like to thank the Chair, the other bureau members, and the representatives of the Secretariat, including the interpreters and other staff, for their hard work. I wish all the delegates to have a safe and restful intersession.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
