Statement by H.E. Ambassador Hiroshi Minami

Deputy Permanent representative of Japan to the United Nations

Organization of work

First resumed session of the Fifth Committee

February 29, 2016

Mr. Chairman,

This Committee managed to finish the Main Session last year within the scheduled timeline, reversing the worrying trend of the previous two years. In this regard, I would like to thank the able leadership of you, Mr. Chairman, and the dedication of the Bureau members. I would also like to acknowledge and commend the flexibility shown by all Member States and the contribution of the Secretariat, which made it possible for us to finish in time and in consensus.

In this first resumed session, we have before us many important issues such as human resources management, ACABQ reform, special political missions and their backstopping arrangement reviews as well as various items requiring examinations of their revised estimates. We should build on the positive momentum created in the Main Session as well as our enhanced working relationship to bring this session to a successful conclusion by March 24th. In this regard, we would expect excellent cooperation of the Secretariat and the ACABQ to ensure the timely submission of documentations.

Mr. Chairman,

Let me conclude by assuring you that my delegation will continue to engage in all discussions of this session in a positive and constructive manner. My delegation looks forward to working with all the other delegations with a view to achieving consensus on all items, following our long-running tradition of this Committee based on the General Assembly Resolution 41/213.

I thank you, Mr. Chairman.
