Remarks by H.E. Ambassador Koro Bessho
Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations
At the Reception to Celebrate
The Birthday of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan
7 December 2016
His Excellency Mr. Peter Thomson, President of the 71st General Assembly,
His Excellency Mr. Jan Eliasson, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations,
Fellow Ambassadors,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Thank you very much for taking time from your busy schedules to join us today.
I would like to extend my heartfelt welcome as we celebrate the 83rd birthday of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan. Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress continue to foster cordial relations with countries around the world. They received 16 heads of states and governments this year, while also paying an official visit to the Philippines.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
This year marks the 60th anniversary of Japan’s admission to the United Nations. Ever since, cooperation with the UN constitutes one of the principal pillars of our foreign policy. The fact that Prime Minister Abe has participated in the UN General Assembly for four consecutive years is testament to the importance we place on this august institution.
From resolving conflicts, addressing refugee crises to eradicating poverty and promoting human rights, the role expected of the United Nations is greater than ever.
Japan stands ready to play its part. At the Security Council, to which Japan is currently member, we continue to address numerous challenges to international peace and security, including situations in North Korea, the Middle East and Africa. On African Development, Japan co-organized with the UN and the AU, the sixth TICAD Meeting for African development, which was held in Africa for the first time.
All such efforts are based on the conviction that, however difficult it may seem, when nations unite, there is little we cannot achieve. We look forward to working with all of you to overcome challenges and seize opportunities that lie ahead.
Taking this opportunity, I would like to pay tribute to the tireless dedication and hard work demonstrated by Secretary General Ban Ki-moon who concludes his term this month and look forward to working with the Secretary General-designate Mr. Antonio Guterres, upon assumption of his duties.
In closing, allow me to propose a toast to the health of all of you present, as well as to the work of the United Nations in uniting our strengths towards peace and better livelihoods for all. …Kampai!
