Statement by Mr. Katsuhiko Imada
Counsellor, Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations

Organization of Work
Main Part of the Seventy-First Session of the Fifth Committee
29 September 2016

Madame Chair,

I would first like to congratulate you and the other members of the Bureau on your elections. I believe your able guidance and leadership will lead us to a successful conclusion of this session.

In this session, we have before us many important issues, such as the 2018-2019 budget outline, human resources management and other outstanding issues which have been deferred to this session. In particular, on human resources management, we the Member States should express our collective thought by adopting a General Assembly resolution, as the change of Secretary-General is expected during this session.

Under the wise guidance of the chair, we should unite under the common goal to strictly observe the scheduled end date of this session. This is all the more important because we have commenced this session a week earlier than is usual.

Madame Chair,

Let me conclude by assuring you that my delegation will continue to engage in all discussions of this session in a positive and constructive manner. My delegation looks forward to working with all the other delegations with a view to achieving consensus on all items, following the long-established tradition of this Committee.

I thank you, Madame Chair.
