Lecture to Ritsumeikan University Students

February 17th, 2016

On Wednesday, February 17th, 2016, 24 students from Ritsumeikan University visited the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations to receive a lecture by Counsellor Miyano.

Counsellor Miyano began by explaining the history behind the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in September 2015. She further explained that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) integrate the three dimensions of sustainable development, namely economic, environmental and social ones and are composed of 17 goals. She emphasized the holistic and comprehensive nature of the Agenda, which is not limited to traditional notion of “development” but encompasses such goal as “to promote powerful and inclusive society.” She also brought up behind-the-scenes discussions and negotiations that led to consensus on the Agenda by introducing her experiences.
