Lecture to Kumon Kokusai Junior High School by Secretary Kinoshita

26 March 2015

On March 26, nineteen students from Kumon Kokusai Junior High School visited the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations to receive a lecture from Secretary Yoshitaka Kinoshita.

Secretary Kinoshita first introduced his experience as a Portuguese expert in Brazil and explained how its working environment differs from that of the Mission.   He also explained how Japan establishes its relations with foreign countries and with the UN, while referring to his work as a diplomat. Secretary Kinoshita then discussed the overall structure of the UN, raising the Security Council and Economic and Social Council as examples of main UN committees, and UNCEF, UNDP and UNHCR as UN family members. Furthermore, he raised the three pillars of the UN – Peace, Development and Human Rights, which he elaborated by giving specific examples.  Lastly, Secretary Kinoshita gave words of advice to the students, emphasizing the importance in “paying close attention to foreign countries,” “working on our communication skills,” and “enhancing our strengths, and valuing our friends.”

Secretary Kinoshita answered questions that students raised on his experience in Brazil, and on subjects such as PKO and issues discussed in the Security Council.
