Lecture to the National Model United Nations Student Participants by Ambassador Okamura

On March 16, nine students from Japan participating in the National Model United Nations visited the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations to receive a lecture from Ambassador Yoshifumi Okamura. In the lecture, Ambassador Okamura outlined the role of the UN and its various committees while asking the students what committees and agenda they will be in charge of in the Model UN. “What can we expect from the UN?” asked Ambassador Okamura. After hearing students’ various answers to the question, he noted that the UN is an appropriate organization for international rule-making takes place by adopting resolutions which reflect the view of international community. Furthermore, while referring to the activities of PBC (Peacebuilding Commission), Ambassador Okamura explained the restoration of order in post-armed conflicts situations, as one of the important tasks of the UN. While referring to his experiences in diplomatic field, Ambassador Okamura answered various questions that students raised, including the PBC’s forthcoming tasks and how the member states express their ideas on the floor during a certain meeting.
