Lecture to Tokyo Graduate School Students
9 March 2015
On Monday, March 9, 2015, eleven students from Tokyo Graduate School visited the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations to receive a lecture by Counsellor Fukahori. Counsellor Fukahori outlined the aims and general characteristics of the UN while referring to its collective security system, as well as the significant degree of legitimacy that it holds as an international organization. He pointed out the difference between the decision making processes of the General Assembly and Security Council, elaborating on the larger authority of the latter in comparison with the former, and emphasized the importance of Security Council Reform. Counsellor Fukahori also explained disarmament, non-proliferation, and the Post-2015 Agenda, and concluding that, in conducting “diplomacy” within the UN regarding these issues, one must have insight that allows him/her to look at the reality with both objectivity and ideals. After the lecture, Counsellor Fukahori answered various questions that students raised on issues such as the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), and UN Reform. |
