Lecture to Cerritos High School Students by Counsellor Nishimaki

5 March 2015

On March 5th, students from Cerritos High School, visiting New York for attending the Model UN, visited the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations to receive a briefing by Counsellor Hisao Nishimaki.

During the briefing, Counsellor Nishimaki outlined the activities of the United Nations, based on the three pillars of the UN’s work, including peace and security, development, and human rights. Counsellor Nishimaki also introduced the UN resolution process by showing the video of the Third Committee meetings. Using the work of the Third Committee as an example, he outlined the process of drafting, revising, and ultimately passing resolutions in the General Assembly. Counsellor Nishimaki concluded his briefing by explaining the organization and activities of the Japanese Mission, focusing on how the work of the Six Main Committees is divided and tackled throughout the Mission.

The students showed their great preparation for the Model UN and excellent comprehension of the topics discussed by Counsellor Nishimaki, as evidenced by their pointed questions relating to the work of the UN. During the Q&A session, the students touched on topics like Japan’s agenda for the Sustainable Development Goals, disaster risk redction, and the response to the recent Ebola disease crisis.
