On February 9th, 30 students from Sophia University visited the Permanent Mission of Japan to receive a lecture from Ambassador Okamura and Secretary Yajima.
Ambassador Okamura first explained Japan’s contributions to the UN and international community by referring to its financial contributions and number of Japanese personnel dispatched to each UN Mission, and by also introducing the Fifth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD V) held in Yokohama, Japan two years ago as one of Japan’s effective foreign policies. Ambassador emphasized the importance of having the ability to answer any and all questions on the spot.
Ambassador’s lecture was followed by introduction to recruiting process of the UN and associated organizations by Secretary Yajima. She first explained the differences between national and international civil servants and introduced the work of the recruitment center for international organizations. She then gave words of advice on how to prepare oneself to be offered a job at the UN. Lastly, Secretary Yajima shared her experience as a delegate to the fifth committee of the General Assembly.
Students actively participated in Q&A session following the lecture, raising questions on both Japan’s diplomacy in the UN and working for the UN as international civil servants.
