Lecture to St. John’s University Students by Counsellor Nishimaki

8 December 2014

On December 8, 2014, thirty five students from St. Johns University visited Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations to receive a lecture by Counsellor Nishimaki.

The main theme of the lecture was “What is the UN?” Using a number of sample documents, including a resolution adopted in the Third Committee, Counsellor Nishimaki explained to the students the existing functions as well as issues that the UN faces today. He also discussed the structure, historical background, and the three pillars of the UN – International Peace and Security, Development, and Human Rights.

From the beginning, many students actively participated in the conversation, raising various questions regarding, for example, roles and rules of the General Assembly and Security Council as well as the role of the Permanent Mission of Japan within the UN. Throughout the lecture, Counsellor Nishimaki carefully answered those questions, noting the significance of 70th anniversary of the UN next year to both the international community and Japan.
