On November 7th, 23 students from Otsuma Women's University visited the Permanent Mission of Japan to the UN to receive a lecture by Ambassador Yoshikawa and Minister Shimizu.
Minister Shimizu first explained the historical background, from the foundation of the UN to the present, by thoroughly elaborating on how the role of the UN and Japan has changed over the years. He then introduced Japan's activities in areas including Human Rights and Peacekeeping Operations. He also made remarks on the 69th session of the General Assembly High-Level Week in September, and explained the significance of the 70th anniversary of the UN in the coming year.
Ambassador Yoshikawa continued the lecture by first raising the issue of Ebola Outbreak, in which he explained the efforts and contributions of Japan by referring to the pledges announced in Prime Minister’s speech during the general debate this September. Ambassador also discussed the Security Council reform and closed his lecture by sending words of advice to the students, that it’s important for each and every person to turn his or her attention to issues concerning peace, development, human rights and so on. After the lecture, students showed their enthusiasm by actively raising questions regarding the Security Council Reform, contributions of the Japanese government, and number of Japanese staffs working in international organizations. |
