Lecture to High School Students from Iwate Prefecture of Japan by Minister Sekiguchi

28 October 2014

On October 28th, thirteen high school students from Iwate Prefecture of Japan visited the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations to receive a lecture by Minister Noboru Sekiguchi.

Minister Sekiguchi began with a brief self-introduction and introductory remarks on Japan’s role in the United Nations. He raised examples of diplomatic activities that take place daily at the UN, including how multilateral talks and agenda-setting processes are being conducted. He also referred to major issues to be addressed at the 70th UN General Assembly in September 2015. The minister continued his lecture by introducing his subject of expertise, the Post-2015 Development Agenda. He also brought up the Third United Nations Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction, to be held in Sendai, Japan early next year. Minister Sekiguchi concluded his lecture by pointing out the elements that will enable a person to succeed in the global arena.

The students listened to the briefing diligently and raised questions regarding the key concerns and subjects discussed at the UN today, as well as how Minister Sekiguchi decided to become a diplomat.
