Lecture to Nanzan University Students by Counsellor Ono

20 August 2014

On August 20th, thirty students from Nanzan University visited the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations to receive a lecture by Counsellor Mr. Ono.

Counsellor Mr. Ono gave a PowerPoint presentation on the subject of conducting diplomacy in the United Nations, especially by focusing at budgetary issues. He first gave an overview of the UN itself and explained the difference between working for the UN Secretariat and for the Mission. He then explained how the UN budget is being managed by introducing both the regular budget and the budget for Peacekeeping Operations. He also introduced Japan as the second largest financial contributor to the UN, and elaborated the process of budget negotiation by explaining how the issue is being addressed and discussed in the Fifth Committee of the General Assembly.

In response to Counsellor Mr. Ono's lecture, students asked questions regarding the work at the Mission and what they could do to work for the UN in future career.
