Lecture to Osaka Seikei Girls High School by Counsellor Takahashi and Secretary Sumi

11 July 2014

On July 11th, fifteen students from Osaka Seikei Girls High School visited the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations to receive a lecture by Counsellor Takahashi and Secretary Sumi.

Counsellor Takahashi first gave a general overview of the United Nations by introducing the major issues being discussed today. He then discussed the major roles of the Security Council, giving a thorough explanation of the objective of its reform and sharing his experiences while working on Security Council reform.

Counsellor Takahashi’s lecture was followed by Secretary Sumi’s introduction to measures taken to promote women’s rights and empowerment. Secretary Sumi presented a speech delivered at a conference and various photographs from UN events to elaborate, and also explained the role of Japan and the international community in resolving significant women’s issues.

Students actively partook in the presentation as well, asking questions on topics like Security Council Reform and Sexual Violence in Conflict.  When asked about the skills required to become a diplomat or member of the UN Secretariat, Counsellor Takahashi and Secretary Sumi shared their personal paths to a career in diplomacy, and emphasized the importance of being aware of international news events and acquiring language proficiency.
