Haiku Contest and Awards Ceremony 2014
7 June 2014
On June 7th, 2014 Haiku Contest Awards Ceremony was held at United Nations International School (UNIS), hosted by the Northwest Council of Teachers of Japanese (NWCTJ) together with the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations.
The ceremony began with an opening performance by the local band, Y.B.W. Project. Their performance including the famous "Sukiyaki Song" was followed by a speech by Minister Shimizu from the Mission of Japan. Students who received first to third places were recognized and given certificates. These students recited their haiku poems and each received comments and feedback from the judges.
The awards ceremony was followed by a reception in which the participants, inspired by the Japanese culture, shared their joy in expressing themselves through Haiku poetry.
The ninth annual Haiku Contest received in total 1400 haiku pieces both in Japanese and English from eight states and major cities including Boston and Washington D.C., and from Japan and more than 10 countries in Asia, Europe and Africa. Among these works, 115 poems were awarded and exhibited at UNIS for 8 days. |
