Seminar "Fukushima After 2049 Days, Current Revitalization on the Ground"

On October 19th, a seminar “Fukushima After 2049 Days, Current Revitalization on the Ground” was held at the United Nations Headquarters with the participation by Mr. Masao Uchibori, Governor of Fukushima Prefecture. Ms. Cristina Gallach, Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, the Permanent Representative of Slovak Republic, the Permanent Representative of Oriental Republic of Uruguay along with members of Permanent Missions to UN and UN staffs attended the seminar. First, Governor Uchibori expressed his sincere gratitude for the support Fukushima Prefecture received after the Great East Japan Earthquake and explained the current progress of reconstruction in Fukushima, recovery of reputation after the explosion at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, support for the evacuees, infrastructure recovery of that area, local agricultural products (Sake), and new industries (renewable energy, robot industry, etc.) that are the driving force of the revitalization. Then, Mr. Neil McFarlane, Chief of the New York Liaison Office, United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, discussed how theory and practice from global to local is working through the concept of “build back better”. There was also a Q&A session moderated by Ambassador Minami, Deputy Permanent Representative of Japan. Participants discussed challenges of revitalization and the future progress of Fukushima.
