May 6th, 2016
On Friday May 6 2016, the Permanent Mission of Japan, together with Japan Society hosted a screening of a classic Japanese film “I Was Born, But…” directed by Yasujiro Ozu, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Japan’s membership in the United Nations. The program began with an explanation of the film, followed by the opening remarks by Ambassador Motohide Yoshikawa, Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations. “I Was Born, But…” is known as the best film among all the silent movies directed by Mr.Ozu. The theme is “family." The movie entertained the audience and created a relaxing mood throughout the screening. “Ozu’s movie is hardly screened in New York, even if I were to pay for it…so today was a great opportunity for me,” said one guest after the screening. “Inviting United Nations staffs was an excellent idea to promote Japan through Ozu’s film.” A guest from UN also commented, “Mr. Ozu is like Japanese Chaplin.” The event ended with a great success. |
