Oku/Inoue Commemorative Youth UN Visit

On March 24, eight award-winning junior and senior high school students on a national speech/essay contest visited the Permanent Mission of Japan to the UN to meet with Ambassador Okamura as part of the Oku/Inoue Commemorative Youth UN Visit program. After making the welcome remarks, Ambassador Okamura reflected on his memories with Ambassador Oku and explained that they began their diplomatic career in the same year. He emphasized the significance of being chosen as the student representatives to participate in this Commemorative program. Counsellor Mase and Secretary Kinoshita also explained that they came across with Ambassador Oku through the work of reconstruction assistance to Iraq. They also shared their experiences working in different embassies and what they currently do at the Mission. In the Q&A session, students raised questions on various topics such as language acquisition, work of the Mission, and challenges faced by international community. Through the two-day program, students received a lecture from UNESCO officer and visited the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs, UNDP, the US and Turkish Missions. They also attended the luncheon with Japanese staffs working at the UN and UN related organizations. |
